Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland is closing on January 6, 2025 until sometime in 2026.

A spokesperson for Walt Disney World told “Good Morning America” the last day to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be Jan. 5, 2025, before its temporary closure.

The spokeperson also said most of the updates won’t be noticeable to guests. It’s expected that the ride system will be modernized to reduce ride down time and maintenance issues in the future.

There are also rumors that Disney could update the Magic Kingdom version to include the dynamite explosion effect that other Big Thunder rollercoasters at other Disney park worldwide already have.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad being closed also means you won’t be able to ride it to take photos of the construction for Cars Land and Villains Land that will surround Big Thunder also starting in 2025.

What Is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad?

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a rollercoaster and family-friendly thrill ride at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL.

The height requirement for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is 40 inches and taller.

Here’s what Disney has to say about the backstory for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad:

“Legend has it that soon after gold was first discovered here in the 1850s, eerie things began to happen. Trains would take off and race through tunnels—by themselves.

After you arrive at the legendary Big Thunder Mining Company, descend into an abandoned mine shaft and board your train. As you enter the cursed cavern, the engine speeds up along the rickety track. Dodge exploding dynamite and falling boulders as you swoop around turns, drop into canyons and dart through the mysterious ghost town of Tumbleweed.

Your rip-roaring adventure proves that some legends are true. You’re sure to have a real blast!”
