Walt Disney Pictures just released the first trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King and confirmed some major details.

This live-action backstory of Mufasa will be directed by Barry Jenkins and will also serve as a follow up to Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action remake of The Lion King.

It seems Simba is tasking Rafiki to recount Mufasa’s tale and that’ll take place in a series of flashbacks.

It’s confirmed Beyonce Knowles-Carter is reprising her role as Nala and her daughter Blue Ivy Carter is making her film debut as the voice of Kiara, Simba and Nala’s daughter.

Also returning: Donald Glover as Simba and Billy Eichner and Seth Rogan as Timon and Puma, respectively.

The cast also includes Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, a formidable lion with big plans for his pride.

Additional casting includes: Aaron Pierre as Mufasa; Preston Nyman as Zazu; John Kang as Rafiki; Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki; and Tiffany Boone as Sarabi.

Mufasa: The Lion King hits theaters December 20, 2024.
